Public Statement on Tumbler Ridge, BC – School Shooting

The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Canada is deeply saddened and heartbroken by the tragic school shooting that occurred in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, the students, educators, and the entire community shaken by this senseless act of violence. No child should ever fear for their safety in a place of learning, and no parent should ever have to worry about their child’s return home.

As Canadians, we share a collective responsibility to ensure that our schools remain sanctuaries of safety, growth, and hope. As Muslims, we are guided by principles that honour the sanctity of life, the dignity of every human being, and the pursuit of peace. Islam teaches that every life is sacred. The Qur’an reminds us that “whoever saves one life, it is as if they have saved all of humanity.” This powerful message underscores our duty to protect one another, to uplift one another, and to stand firmly against violence in all its forms. Our faith calls us to embody compassion, mercy, and respect—values that transcend religious boundaries and unite us as human beings. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that a true believer is one from whose words and actions people feel safe. This principle guides our commitment to fostering communities rooted in empathy, understanding, and mutual care.

In moments of tragedy, our strength lies in our unity. We urge all Canadians—regardless of faith, background, or identity—to come together in support of the affected families and the Vancouver community. Let us offer our prayers, our solidarity, and our commitment to building a society where such tragedies become unthinkable. We also call on civic leaders, policymakers, educators, and community organizations to work collaboratively toward meaningful solutions that address the root causes of violence and ensure the safety and well-being of our children.

ICNA Canada remains dedicated to promoting peace, justice, and civic responsibility. We will continue to engage with communities across the country to foster dialogue, strengthen social bonds, and advocate for measures that protect our youth and uphold the values we all cherish.

May The God Almight grant comfort to the grieving, healing to the injured, and strength to all those affected. May He guide us toward compassion, unity, and a future free from violence.

Sincerely,

Khalid Saifullah Khan
